Coaching is a system of facilitating change that is based on the prinicpes of Neuroscience. The human mind is an incredible thing, it is a connection making machine. We are constantly making new associations and connections with areas of our mind. For each and every concept in your mind you have develped a dense network of associations with that concept that flavours how you see and understand it in the world.

1 minute Exercise: Think of the concept  "Lemon".

You may think of a taste, a colour, a smell, the feeling of an object... you may have an association that it is good for digestion, that you can user it for cooking certain dishes... that is a type of car that you don't want to purchase...

 

So there you have it, Lemon, who would have thought! The interesting thing is that we have these networks developed for every concept in our mind. Some are helpful- others are not. Take fitness for example, or nutrition, or your stress levels. For each of these you have a dense network of associations, connecting to a range of mood states, threshold levels and acceptable outcomes for example. Often these areas can become so dense with emotionally charged connections, sensitised if you like,  that our ability to access our thinking (the area of our prefrontal cortex) becomes inhibitied by the emotional valence (Limbic system) of the connections. This makes effective decision making difficult and often we can get 'stuck' in a holding pattern where we are not in our ideal situation and we are not making effective progress. Often we can make short term changes, using the examples given, you might find a new healthy dish you occasinoally have, a type of exercise that seems like ti may 'stick' or get on top of your work for a minute so it seems like your in control of your environment. 

What this is doing essentially, is adding on another branch to that dense network, or like clearing a small little patch in a garden overgrown with a nxious weed. it only lasts so long because the old connections will soon creep in and dominate this fresh new area of your mind.

So whats the answer? Creating a new map entierly. See the area in a toaly new way, with the assistance of your coaches brain in conjunction with yours, you can construct exiting new way of seeig the area yo are focusing on.
